AEA Targets New Aspiring Leaders at 2014 Minority Leadership Training Conference
If you aspire to be an Association leader or a leader in your school and school system, then the Minority Leadership Training (MLT) Conference is for you! The Alabama Education Association, through its Human and Civil Rights (HCR) Program, is hosting its annual Minority Leadership Training Conference on November 7-9, 2014, at the Perdido Beach Resort Hotel in Orange Beach, Ala. This dynamic conference will provide excellent professional and leadership development for members seeking leadership positions in the Association and the education profession.
This conference will highlight sessions for educators who want to hone their skills as Association leaders. Participants will collaboratively engage in interactive sessions focusing on areas such as professional issues organizing, cultural competence, equity and social justice, and visioning. An exciting new leadership highlight at this year’s conference will be from the HCR Women’s Leadership Training Program. All educators who are seeking leadership positions in the Association are sure to gain knowledge that will help them succeed in their desired roles.
This conference will feature professional learning sessions for educators who want to enhance their skills as instructional leaders and teacher leaders. Participants may begin working on Professional Learning Units (PLUs). Other requirements must be fulfilled after attending content sessions at this conference. Members will have the opportunity to begin working on ONE professional study in Standard 1 – Planning for Continuous Improvement; Standard 2 – Teaching and Learning; Standard 4 – Diversity; Standard 6 – Technology; or, Standard 7 – Management of the Learning Organization. Professional learning sessions will also be provided for future teachers, teacher leaders, classroom teachers, and specialty area educators to earn clock hours for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and also for education support professionals in areas such as educator effectiveness, accountability, parental and community engagement, literacy, bullying, school improvement, and technology.
This year, conference participants are encouraged to send MLTweets. Throughout the weekend, use Twitter to highlight experiences and significant components of knowledge gained using the conference hashtag #AEAMLT2014. Conference registration will begin at 4 p.m., on Friday, November 7, followed by an opening session at 7 p.m. Breakout sessions will continue on Saturday, November 8, and conclude on Sunday, November 9, 2014. This year, Friday night’s activities will feature AEA’s Got Talent! AEA members are encouraged to share their talents on Friday evening during the member reception. Performances are limited to 3-5 minutes.

Click here to register for the MLT Conference online. For members who plan to attend the MLT Conference to earn CEUs, the conference registration fee is $25. The fee for non-members is $250. For members who plan to attend the MLT Conference to begin working on PLUs, the registration fee is $25. The fee for non-members is $500. A late registration fee is effective after October 4, 2014. The late fee for members is $50; the late fee for non-members is $275. The late fee for non-members working on PLUs is $600.
The registration fee covers a full breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, and lunch on Saturday. Breakfast and lunch tickets may be purchased for guests attending the conference with registered participants. Breakfast tickets will be available for $15 each. Lunch tickets will be available for $20 each.

Please use the AEA Group Rate Code #9233 to receive the AEA Group Rate of $97 per night. The deadline to receive the AEA Group Rate is October 1, 2014. After this date, standard room rates will apply based on availability only.
