AEA Minority Leadership Training Celebrates 30 Years

The Alabama Education Association, through its Human and Civil Rights (HCR) Program, is celebrating its 30th year of statewide leadership training through the NEA Minority Leadership Training Program (MLTP). This program was created by NEA to enhance the Association’s ability to advocate for public school employees by increasing the participation of ethnic minorities in all categories of membership in decision making processes on national, state, and local levels. AEA’s implementation of this program has enhanced participation of ethnic minorities as well as ALL members of the Association.

The Minority Leadership Training (MLT) Conference will be held on November 3-5, 2017, at the Perdido Beach Resort Hotel in Orange Beach, Alabama. This dynamic conference will once again provide excellent professional and leadership development for members seeking leadership positions in the Association and the education profession. The MLT Conference is open to ALL AEA members.

While there are no scholarships available for this conference, local Associations are encouraged to assist members with attending the conference. Several local Association leaders have also indicated that members are carpooling and sharing hotel rooms to defray the cost of attending the conference. They highly encourage colleagues around the state to do the same.

Professional Learning
This conference will provide all AEA members who aspire to be leaders with opportunities to learn and collaborate in engaging leadership settings. MLT sessions to be presented at this year’s conference include: Finding Common Ground on Bullying, Cultural Competence for Educators, and Creating Change through Social Justice.

The newest addition to this year’s conference is a component of AEA’s new Creative Leadership initiative. Leaders will learn ways to engage families in education through the Power of Creativity. They will engage in conversations about the roles of creativity, communication, and critical thinking in transforming teaching and learning. Leaders will also have access to resources to utilize in their schools and classrooms.

Another highlight of this year’s conference will feature AEA’s collaboration with the Alabama State Department of Education on the new statewide Positive Behavior Supports campaign designed to help reduce suspensions and chronic absenteeism in Alabama public schools. Leaders will be introduced to the program that will premiere at the MLT Conference followed by regional trainings in various locations to be announced throughout the state.

Sessions will be provided for educators who want to begin working on a Professional Learning Unit (PLU) in Standard 3 – Human Resources Development, Standard 4 – Diversity, Standard 5 – Community and Stakeholder Relationships, OR Standard 6 – Technology. Other requirements must be fulfilled online and/or face-to-face after attending the MLT Conference sessions, in order to earn a PLU. The technology study may also include an additional face-to-face session. Sessions will be provided for teacher leaders and specialty area educators to earn professional development clock hours for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and also for education support professionals in the areas of social justice, parental and community engagement, innovative technology skills, leadership skills, parliamentary procedure, and much more. In order to receive professional development credit hours for participation in the MLT Conference, participants must enroll on Chalkable PD using PD Title Number AEAMLT17. Certificates of attendance will be provided for those who do not require documentation of professional development credit.

Leadership Exchange
This year, conference participants are encouraged to participate in an online Leadership Exchange. Throughout MLT weekend, participants can look forward to a Leadership Exchange where they can share best leadership practices learned at the conference on edCommunities. Participants will be encouraged to collaborate online and learn ways to hone their skills as educational leaders.

Social Media
This year’s conference will feature MLTweeters. These are participants who will send MLTweets throughout the weekend. They will use Twitter to highlight significant experiences and components of knowledge gained using the conference hashtag #AEAMLT17. Conference participants are also encouraged to use hashtag #AEAMLT17 on Facebook, Instagram and other social media networks. PEEHIP Wellness Screening
PEEHIP Wellness Screening will be offered on Saturday, November 4, 2017, 2:00-5:00pm, to help members avoid the $50.00 surcharge. Be sure to bring your PEEHIP insurance card with you, if you want to participate in the screening. Flu shots will also be available. Vaccine consent forms are required and will be provided.

Registration Fees
The MLT Conference registration form is available at www.myaea.org. For members who plan to attend the MLT Conference to earn CEUs, the conference registration fee is $30.00.  The fee for non-members is $250.00.  For members who plan to attend the MLT Conference to begin working on PLUs, the registration fee is also $30.00.  The fee for non-members is $500.00.  The registration fee from October 3, 2017, to November 1, 2017, is $60.00. After November 1, 2017, the registration fee is $75.00. On-site registration is $75.00 for members. Conference registration fees are non-refundable.

Meal Tickets
Breakfast and lunch will be provided during the conference. The registration fee covers a full breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and lunch on Saturday. Breakfast and lunch tickets may also be purchased for guests attending the conference with registered participants. Breakfast tickets will be available for $20.00 each.  Lunch tickets will be available for $25.00 each.

Housing Reservations
Housing reservations are to be made directly with the Perdido Beach Resort Hotel by calling 800-634-8001, or by making reservations online at www.perdidobeachresort.com. Please use the AEA Group Rate Code #11031 to receive the AEA Group Rate of $101.00. The deadline to receive the AEA Group Rate is October 2, 2017. After this date, standard room rates will apply based on availability only.
