A showdown on the passage of the state’s education budget in the state Senate is set for May 19. The big universities are maneuvering to get more money or risk killing the budget, a Senate scenario that would put K-12 schools in turmoil for the coming year. Without a budget, thousands of pink-slips for new teachers and school employees would go out from school boards unable to renew contracts or plan for the coming school year.
“We are contacting every AEA member in every Senate district to make them aware that allowing the Senate to kill the budget spells nothing but disaster for K-12,” said AEA’s Executive Secretary Dr. Paul Hubbert. “While the K-12 education family is asking the Senate for a survival budget, some senators are saying that they will risk killing the budget to give the universities an additional $25 million that the Education Trust Fund simply doesn’t have.”
In the article below you will find links to legislative alerts that AEA has sent out in past weeks asking for members help. Click on those links or the link in the right hand column and let your Senator know where you stand. You can e-mail, fax, or print a letter to your Senator within minutes.
