For Individuals:

The Jack Kinnaman Scholarship

This scholarship was created in memory of our NEA-Retired Vice President and former Advisory Council member, Jack Kinnaman. He also represented NEA-Retired with NEA's Fund for Children and Public Education and held during his career several other local, state, and national Association positions.

He is most fondly remembered for wearing the "Cat in the Hat" costume during NEA's Read Across America events. He cared about students—especially ones who needed a helping hand financially. His family wanted scholarships to go to these students.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Print and submit a completed application. In addition, include two (2) letters of recommendation—one from the faculty advisor of your NEA Student Program chapter— the other from someone who is not a relative. The scholarship application can be found in the appendix section of the advisor and local leader handbooks and also online at www.nea.org/students-program. Click on Grants and Programs on the left side. For additional information, contact NEA-Retired at (202) 822-7149.

For Local Chapters:

C.L.A.S.S. Grants

Community Learning Through America’s Schools(C.L.A.S.S.) Grants encourage and support the efforts of NEA Student members reaching out and involving themselves (and their schools and universities) in their communities. C.L.A.S.S. Projects are developed locally and carried out in a joint effort involving both NEA Student local and an NEA Pre-K-12, Educational Support Professional, Higher Education or Retired local.

C.L.A.S.S. grants are designed to support outreach activities that bring together various members and community groups in an effort to benefit children, public schools, and the society at-large. In-classroom activities that do not involve other components of the community and Association are not eligible for C.L.A.S.S. funds.

The grant applications can be found in the appendix section of the advisor and local leader handbooks and also online at www.nea.org/students-program. Click on Grants and Programs on the left side. CLASS and SOAR are at the top of the page. Clicking on CLASS takes you to information about the grant and application process. Grant applications are accepted on a continuous basis.

SOAR Grants

Student Organizing Assistance Resources (SOAR) are available to local and state student member associations and Uniserv units to recruit and organize student members. Resource money is available for intended activities in the following categories:

The grant applications can be found in the appendix section of the advisor and local leader handbooks and also online at www.nea.org/students-program. Click on Grants and Programs on the left side.
