"It's Great To Be From Alabama!"

Welcome to the 2009 Read Across Alabama Celebration!

Celebrate Alabama

Far too often we overlook our communities and the wonderful stories that surround us. From To Kill a Mockingbird to The Miracle Worker, Alabama is full of literary treasures and interesting tales. 2009 Read Across Alabama focuses on stories about Alabama and children’s authors from Alabama, with every grade in mind.
Read Across Alabama posters will be distributed in mid-February along with bookmarks for students. There are also great resources such as coloring sheets and a list and synopsis of books from Alabama authors available.
Sometimes finding quality Alabama children’s literature is not easy. AEA has put together an extensive list of Alabama children’s books and Alabama children’s authors to help teachers and librarians.

Celebrate Writing Too!

AEA would also like to encourage students across the state to write their own Alabama tales. AEA will be collecting student writing to create an electronic book of stories, essays, poems, and drawings depicting local places and life, and why it’s great to be from Alabama. AEA members are encouraged to have their students write something, and for younger ages drawings will also be accepted.
At the end of March, AEA will publish an online book: It’s Great to Be from Alabama. Your students will be able to see their stories displayed for the whole world to see! This is a great way to tie in the importance of writing along with other Read Across Alabama activities. The students’ names along with the submitting teacher’s names will appear in the final electronic book. Click here for the Submission Form that must accompany each student submission.
*Please note that you must have permission from the parents/legal guardians of the student before AEA can publish the student's work online or in the Alabama School Journal.

Let us see your celebration!

As always, we look forward to your photos of Read Across Alabama events at your school and will continue to print those in the Alabama School Journal beginning in March.
