Welcome to 2008 Read Across Alabama, the annual event sponsored by the Alabama Education Association to celebrate reading in our elementary schools.
As you can see, this year we had some very special guests leading the effort to make reading fun, Auburn University's Aubie and the University of Alabama's Big Al! Read Across Alabama resources, including bookmarks, coloring sheets, letter sized posters, and book charts to chart how many books your students read, can be found below.

AEA member shares RAA activity plans
Dear AEA,
I thought the Big Al and Aubie theme was great. I printed out the letter size posters and made a bulletin board outside our door to help the children keep it in mind. This week I made a big poster of the print outs and am telling all the students K-2 who come to science lab about my plans.
We’ve been studying about our country in many aspects, from Abraham Lincoln’s life, the penny (U.S. Mint), symbols of our country and landmarks and their history, to funny tales about past presidents. The kids have had fun and I have too, learning along with them.
We were talking about what the colors represent red-courage, blue-justice, white-purity. (I tied in that both “teams” wear “white” football jerseys and when we start our celebration, we are all going to be one big team.) The library has asked the kids to wear white shirts (cat in the hat theme) and I told the children the “white” shirts would be our “team” color.
I plan to have reading “nooks” in the science lab to tie in with our upcoming unit on animals.
On the coloring sheet, I pointed out that Big Al’s book is all about “tigers” so he can learn more about Aubie. Aubie’s book is about “elephants” so he can learn more about Big Al. I hope to have lots of stuff about tigers and elephants. I’ve already encouraged kids to do some research and even draw/write, etc., to share with class so we can make a journal about our week. Since I see K-2, I am excited to see how things turn out.
I hope to be able to print out colored bookmarks. I am going to give each student a coloring page of Big Al reading about tigers and Aubie reading about elephants. I plan on having books from the library about tigers and elephants, clipboards/pencils for kids to draw and write about facts they have read about so we can make our journal.
Sincerely,
Annette Albert |
