Postsecondary Division

The AEA Postsecondary Division consists of every AEA member who is an employee of an Alabama postsecondary institution, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the Alabama Department of Youth Services, the State Department of Education, or the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service.

The purpose of the Postsecondary Division is to promote the welfare of its members and to further the cause of postsecondary education in Alabama.

Postsecondary Division Elections Results Announced

In a tight race, George W. Terrell Jr. narrowly defeated incumbent Sylvester "Sly" James to become the new postsecondary president. Incumbent Secretary Tammy Potter reclaimed her position over challenger Dr. Barbara Cady.

Sylvester James

We can make a difference

We are the Postsecondary Division of the Alabama Education Association. Our division is over 3,000 members strong!

Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Sylvester James, a 25-year educator and current postsecondary president.

I would like to take a moment to tell you what I believe to be important: hard work, dedication, communication, and togetherness. We have many talented individuals who serve in postsecondary positions. I would like to combine those talents and promote postsecondary to the next level. We have room to grow, but need your help, assistance, and support.

We need to build a strong network between our division members and the colleges and/or schools that employ them because many times there are similar problems at different locations. Some examples of common issues are: salary schedules, emergency leave issues, and the problem phrase “at the discretion of the president.”

We know public education is in better hands than ever before. Now, let’s join our hands together to make it even stronger. Together, we will make a difference.

The AEA Delegate Assembly will be held in Birmingham, November 29 through December 3, 2007. The Postsecondary Division will hold a division meeting during this time and I encourage all local postsecondary presidents to attend.

If you are not an elected delegate representing your local association at the assembly, you may register as a guest. If you have any questions regarding delegate status to the AEA Delegate Assembly, please contact the AEA business office at 1-800-392-5839.

Note: At the 2008 Divisional Conference, Clint Daughtrey and Greg Graves, both with AEA's legal department, held a training session entitled Laws Affecting Employees of Postsecondary Institutions. At the request of members, that presentation is now available. Click here to download the presentation.
