How You Can Advocate for Public Education

Promoting educational excellence, the Alabama Education Association (AEA) advocates for its members and the advancement of equitable and quality public education for a diverse state population. AEA leads the movement for excellence in education and is a voice for the education profession.

AEA is recognized throughout the state as Alabama’s most effective and assertive public education advocate. AEA’s more than 100,000 members, whose professional lives are dedicated to providing excellence everyday for every child, combine with AEA staff to forge the state’s most aggressive presence for the right of every child to a quality education. From the halls of the Alabama Statehouse to the smallest schoolhouse, AEA staff and members press the causes of excellence in education and of fairness for the tens of thousands of Alabamians who make their living everyday nurturing the learning experience of children. In virtually every arena of public discourse AEA continues a long tradition of service to its members and to the state’s schoolchildren in education, research, legislative and legal expertise, and, foremost, in leadership of the ongoing struggle for adequate funding of Alabama’s schools

To ensure equity, excellence, and professionalism, AEA constantly seeks to advance and restructure the state’s public education system, increase awareness of educational issues, and communicate AEA positions to the public.

AEA policy demands that the association protect, improve, and expand the rights of education employees and eliminate all forms of discrimination through strong political and legal actions.

Advocating for better public schools in Alabama means engaging the members of the state legislature and the governor and becoming involved in the elective process and the legislative process. Every member should be concerned about the legislative agenda, who their legislators are, and if their legislators protect and support public schools.

AEA members know their legislators and participate in legislative contact teams that inform their legislators about important legislative initiatives that affect public schools and students. Advocating for great public schools begins in local legislative districts.

To advocate means to care about the education profession and school children, to be involved from the local school system to the state and national level. AEA believes that every child deserves a great public school. Great schools for students must have adequate funding, highly qualified teachers and education professionals, necessary classroom supplies, up-to-date technology, and smaller class sizes.
