JefCoEd Transportation Excels

When the state inspector completed his examination of the Jefferson County Transportation Department for 2006, it was no surprise to those who work daily to ensure the safety of school buses that there were zero citations noted on the report.

New "S" Endorsement Required of Bus Drivers
The federal Motor Carrier Safety Act requires that all individuals operating an Alabama school bus designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or that has a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 26,000 pounds, have an “S” school bus endorsement on their Commercial Driver License (CDL).

AEA Saves Bus Drivers $360,000 on CDL fees
In what amounted to a tax on school bus drivers to help balance the General Fund budget, the Riley administration introduced a bill that forced bus drivers to pay a fee for getting an “S” endorsement on their commercial driver’s licenses even though their license had not yet expired. An amendment pushed by AEA exempts school bus drivers from paying the fee before their current license expires. When a driver’s license expires and it is renewed, a renewal fee will be levied as usual, but no additional fee will be required of bus drivers when they go in to simply get an “S” endorsement before their licenses expire.

School Bus Drivers: Their Importance and Training
This position paper* from the Web site of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation, speaks to the importance and proper training of school bus drivers.

Building a Quality Workforce
The driver quality workforce that exists in our public schools does not occur by accident. This workforce comes together when public school drivers are included and recognized as part of the school district’s mission and goals—enhancing student achievement. This effort must include result-oriented job descriptions and evaluations, new employee orientation programs, ongoing in-service training programs, and career-enhancing professional development programs for public school drivers. This booklet* (251 KB Adobe Acrobat file) provides descriptions of these programs.
