Pamela Fossett, Director

The Education Policy and Professional Practice (EPPP) Department has the responsibility for organizing and coordinating AEA activities to help reform public education and restructure public schools, including the professionalization of teaching and the improvement of practice.

EPPP promotes the association’s leadership in education reform, provides technical assistance on evaluation and accountability issues, assists locals in planning and implementing reform initiatives, and supports AEA members serving on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and other national committees and councils.

The EPPP Department assists with the development and application of guidelines for preservice education, accreditation, staff development, and addresses trends and emerging issues, such as technology, special education, vocational education, and collaborative projects with NEA.

EPPP can offer assistance programs to AEA members including:
• Upgrading certificates, resolving certification problems and concerns, and certification rules and regulations;
• Working with the State Department of Education in implementing the National Board Certification process (NBPTS) for the state of Alabama;
• The Minority Leadership Training Conference;
• Addressing human and civil rights (HCR) concerns;
• The Alabama Aerospace Celebration;
• Administering more than 30 different workshops for teachers, administrators, and ESPs;
• Serving as staff consultant for the Association of Classroom Teachers.
• Coordinating and informing members of the NFIE Award for Teaching Excellence and leadership grants. AEA-EPPP works closely with the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE).
