How AEA Uses a Dues Dollar

Business Operations: 13 Cents
Processing membership, cost and maintenance of AEA offices and equipment, utilities, lights, phones, faxes, Internet service, printing costs, accounting costs.

Governmental Relations: 5 Cents
Political organizing, meetings, lobbying the legislature for raises, PEEHIP, retirement, and lobbying against privatization, abolishment of tenure, and other employment rights.

Public Relations: 9 Cents
Printing and mailing the Alabama School Journal, TV and radio promotions of AEA and public education, printing of all membership recruitment materials, New Teacher Handbooks, ESP Handbooks, PR&R Handbooks, calendars, etc.

Research and Technology: 2 Cents
Gathering of research data used to lobby the governor, legislature, SDE, and SBE, monitoring of all state and local education budgets, and maintaining the AEA computer system.

Polling: 3 Cents
Equipment and personnel used to survey our members and the public on critical issues including political races.

Conferences, Commissions, Officers: 11 Cents
Expenses associated with the cost of the AEA Delegate Assembly, ESP Conference, Postsecondary Conference, Leadership Conference, Emerging Leaders School, Administrators Conference, AEA Board of Directors, AEA Officers, AEA Commissions and Committees. Most of this expense provides professional development opportunities.

Educational Policy and Professional Practice: 2 Cents
Expenses associated with the Minority Leadership Conference, Professional Development Conference, Association of Classroom Teachers, and the National Board Certified Teachers’ Program. Provides a wide range of professional development on both a state and local level.

Legal Services: 17 Cents
Expenses associated with the PR&R Conference, PR&R Commission, five AEA attorneys and numerous network attorneys who protect member’s rights if they are treated unfairly by their local board of education, assaulted by a parent or student, or accused of misconduct. AEA attorneys protect members if they are suspended, nonrenewed, transferred, or terminated. They advise and train AEA UniServ directors in the proper course to take in assuring that local school systems follow the law when dealing with employees. They protect your rights.

Field Services: 28 Cents
Provides UniServ directors and managers to work directly with local associations in carrying out their programs and to work directly with members in resolving their problems. UniServ Directors lobby school boards for new policies, file grievances on behalf of members, represent members in employment situations, train officers and association representatives, work with UniServ Councils, lobby legislators to pass AEA supported bills, establish relationships with the media to get AEA’s message out, recruit members, attend board meetings and association meetings, build strong association representative networks in the locals, and visit schools. Provides for the student program in high schools, 2-year colleges and 4-year universities. Provides professional development on a state and local level for administrators, teachers, support professionals, and students.

All other salaries, division expenses, projects, taxes, programs not listed above.
