AEA provides assistance to local school system employees by providing staff known as UniServ directors in communities across the state. UniServ directors are directly involved in helping members at the local level. UniServ directors provide professional assistance to members who need training for their job, professional development, and support in organizing local associations and recruiting members. UniServ directors are the first line of legal defense when AEA members face employment troubles or are falsely accused of misconduct while on the job.
The AEA Field Services Department provides on-site professional services for all members and local associations. Field Services is headed by Assistant Executive Secretary Mary Bruce Ogles, who is assisted by regional managers Michael Todd in Birmingham and Darryl Sinkfield in Montgomery. Thirty-nine (39) UniServ directors complete the Field Services Department and provide assistance to AEA active, ESP, postsecondary, and administrator members.
Each UniServ director is responsible for a segment of the state, with the divisions based upon membership population. The services provided to you as an AEA member by the UniServ directors include assistance with professional development, grievance proceedings, employment problems, employment hearings, salary negotiations, communications, policy development, political action, organizing, professional counseling, and training.
Your UniServ director is only a phone call away. A complete listing of school districts and the UniServ district serving them is available. If you are still unsure of who is assigned to your area, please call AEA’s toll free number, 1-800-392-5839 for assistance.
